Silk Scarves – Not Just for Wearing

Silk scarves are hugely versatile accessories which represent a welcome addition to any woman’s wardrobe.  Not only can they be worn on various parts of the body, be tied in numerous different ways and even be used to give hair and bags a unique look, but they can turn even the simplest and most limited range of outfits into what appears to be a much more expansive collection.  The versatility of silk scarves does not just stop at their "wearability", however.  Those which carry beautiful and unique hand painted designs can play a starring role in terms of home decor too.

 

Home decor is big business and stores are simply packed with products which are designed to beautify our surroundings.  While unique objets d’art and examples of practical and yet individualized home accessories can quite easily be found, often these come at hefty prices which put them out of many people’s reach.  It is, however, still possible to give your home a truly distinctive and luxurious feel which expresses your taste, style and personality without breaking the bank, through the creative use of hand painted silk scarves.  Here are just a few ideas that you may like to try. 

Silk Scarves as Art

 

Few of us these days have the money to invest in original paintings, but that does not mean that you have to compromise by buying mass-produced reproduction prints.  For what is, in many cases, less than the cost of a framed print, you can create a unique piece of art by mounting and framing a hand painted scarf.  Hand painted scarves are, in themselves, original canvasses.  Every design is unique, and matching colors and styles to your interior decor could not be easier.  Especially where you have a large expanse of wall to fill, this represents a highly cost-effective alternative to more traditional paintings.  A simple frame on its own, or a frame and mount which coordinates with the colors in the scarf will really let the beauty of the design stand out and make for an eye catching addition to any room.  As hand painted designs can fade if hung in direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time, however, do be sure to use non-reflective glass in order to protect your artwork.

 

Wall Hangings Provide Color and Texture

 

Another excellent use of hand painted silk scarves is as wall hangings.  Not only do the stunning colors used in the paints and dyes make a distinctive personal statement, but the glorious texture and sheen of silk provides a soft, romantic appeal which works especially well in bedrooms.  Again, try to ensure that the scarf is not hung in direct sunlight if you want to prolong the life of your wall hanging, and also take care if using batons at the top and bottom, being sure to choose rods which are light in weight so as not to stretch the fabric.

 

Silk Scarves as Table Coverings

 

The soft, floaty properties of silk also lend themselves extremely well to any situation in which the fabric needs to be draped.  Although not a practical choice for a dining table cloth, as a central table runner or draped over an occasional or bedside table, a hand painted silk scarf can add a real sense of style and luxury.
