Sarongs have been used by men and women in many different cultures around the world for centuries. Their simplicity and versatility, especially in very hot countries, makes them ideal both in terms of keeping cool and in terms of ease of wear for all kinds of different occasions.
Even in modern day times, however, the sarong is not only a very practical accessory, but also a high fashion statement. Never mind the women, we must surely all remember footballer David Beckham being spotted wearing one a few years ago, and starting a fad which saw many of his admirers following suit.
The ways in which men can wear a sarong though, are somewhat limited. For women, however, there are lots of different techniques for tying gorgeous silk scarves and shawls sarong-style to give completely different looks, and here are just a few ideas.
If, like Mr Beckham, you want to wear your scarf or shawl around your waist, there are two very quick and easy methods that you can follow. Firstly you can just wrap it around your waist and tie the two uppermost corners together. Using a shorter scarf, this will give a plunging effect which leaves one leg revealed from the hip down, but if you prefer to cover up a bit more, a longer length of fabric will allow you to wrap it twice around your waist, effectively creating a long skirt. For a slightly more daring look which is ideal for wearing over the top of a bikini, you can take a large square silk scarf, fold it in half diagonally, wrap it around your hips and tie it to one side.
For those occasions when you want to cover up your top half too, silk scarves and shawls look exquisite when tied as a dress. Not only does the sumptuous silk fabric drape beautifully across the figure in these styles, but also the gorgeous hand painted designs can be seen at their very best.
The simplest way to create a sarong-style dress is to wrap the fabric around your body above the bust and tie the two top corners together at the side. For a different look again, you can also use your silk scarf or shawl to create a halter neck dress. In this case, hold the fabric behind you so that it comes up just underneath your armpits, bring the two uppermost corners of the scarf or shawl together at the front and twist them around one another once or twice so that the fabric feels comfortably tight. Then, take both corners up behind the back of your neck and tie them.
For a stunning off-the-shoulder look, hold one of the top corners of the scarf or shawl over the shoulder where you want it to be tied, leaving a little spare fabric to create the knot. Then simply wrap the remainder of the material around your body above the bust until the other top corner arrives at the back of the shoulder and then tie.
