There can be few of us these days who are not more than a little concerned about the state of our planet. At the same time as using up the Earth’s natural resources at an alarming rate, we continue to belch out poisonous chemicals into the atmosphere and produce millions of non-biodegradable products. As a population, however, increasing numbers of us are turning to more environmentally friendly alternatives wherever possible, in order to ‘do our bit’ for Planet Earth. While some choose to take to their bicycles rather than using the family car, others make greater efforts to buy natural products which cause less harm in their production than their synthetic alternatives.
While fabrics such as nylon and acrylic are derived from fossil fuels, the silk which goes into the production of fabulous silk scarves and shawls comes from a renewable resource. Silk is, of course, a protein fibre which is produced by moth larvae as they spin their cocoons and, as some of the moths used in its production are kept for breeding, so more cocoons can continue to be produced.
Rather than being yet another material which is destined to fill the vastly growing number of land-fill sites around the world, silk is a natural, biodegradable material. While most petroleum-based fabrics could take literally hundreds of years to rot away, when silk comes to the end of its natural life it serves another very useful purpose in that it can be turned into mulch or compost.
In the case of beautiful handmade silk scarves and shawls, it is not just the process for producing the fabric which makes them much more environmentally friendly, but also the processes used for designing and coloring the material. Unlike with mass-produced, printed scarves and shawls which are produced in smoke-belching factories, these stunning accessories are painted entirely by hand using a process which has been around for a great many years and causes no harm to the environment.
Of course, in today’s consumer society in which there is so much choice, we want to be able to buy what we want when we want it, but more and more people are thinking not just about their immediate wants and needs, but about the very future of our planet. Far from finding that their choice has become restricted though, many are finding more beautiful, long-lasting and practical alternatives which cause little or no harm to the environment.
In the case of silk scarves and shawls, not only does the wearer have the benefit of the unique designs produced via an environmentally friendly technique, but also a highly practical, versatile and, above all, hardwearing accessory. Being a product which both avoids the use of precious fossil fuels and is biodegradable, you can wear your stunning accessory with pride, knowing that you have done your bit for the environment, and be assured of a smart, sophisticated and eye-catching look at the same time. What could be better?
