Choosing a Theme for Your Silk Scarf Or Shawl

October 10, 2010

Whether for fear that they will look loud and garish, because they think that they will not suit, or simply because it feels like the more practical option, many women have a tendency to avoid patterned designs on their clothing altogether. The result, therefore, is millions of closets across the country filled with dresses, skirts, pants and tops which all look rather bland and uninspiring. This penchant for plain even extends to their accessories, with shoes, purses and even women’s silk scarves and shawls all featuring solid blocks of single colors.

Even when we do decide to break with tradition and go for something a bit more daring though, it can be difficult to know where to start in terms of choosing a pattern to match our style and personality. With the ability of a stunning and unique hand painted design to lift any silk scarf or shawl out of the doldrums, turning it into a spectacular piece of wearable art, however, finding the right theme is well worth the effort. Here, therefore, are a few things to think about to help you make the perfect choice.

Think about the things you like

In order for us to feel comfortable wearing patterns, it is important to focus on themes which incorporate the things that we like. If you have a particular passion for flowers, for example, then clearly this would make an excellent choice. Take a look at some of the themes on hand painted scarves and shawls to see which ones really gel with your likes or your interests.

Modern or traditional?

Think about your personality and about the styles that you normally go for. Are you a modernist or a traditionalist? If modern is your thing, then consider an abstract design which perhaps features lots of straight lines or angles. If your tastes veer more towards the traditional, perhaps a floral design in either bright or more muted colors might suit better.

Think about your favorite artists

Of course, amongst the fabulous selection of hand painted silk scarves and shawls which feature unique designs, you are not going to find a reproduction of the work of your favorite artist. What you might find, however, is a piece which is reminiscent of their style.

Think about what you don’t like

Using a bit of reverse psychology and thinking about what you don’t like can often be an effective way to get to what really does appeal. Again, try looking at different themes and rule out those which, at an instinctive level, you would prefer to avoid.

Don’t forget that color matters

Sometimes when we look at a pattern, it is not so much the design itself which makes it feel wrong, but the colors that have been used. Remember that a floral design, for example, which uses strong, bold colors will look completely different to one which uses soft pastels, so it is important not to rule out a particular theme without checking out women’s silk scarves and shawls which have a similar theme but contain different shades.
