Hard as it may be to believe, the incredibly soft and versatile fabric of the highly desirable pashmina scarves and shawls comes from combing the fine wool found on the Kashmir goat’s underbelly. The ability of these accessories to meet the demands of everything from casual daytime clothing to sophisticated evening wear makes them a must-have for your closet.
Stunning on their own, you can up the ante with the addition of a shawl or scarf pin or brooch. As is the case with all pieces of jewelry, these items come in a variety of sizes, shapes, styles and colors. Flamboyant or discreet, you can find them all. Yet, you must keep in mind the quality of the scarf or shawl. You do not want to wear anything too heavy. It will pull down and even tear the fine fabric. With this in mind, take care not to roughly mishandle the fabric while it contains a pin. This can create an unsightly hole. Moreover, you should never allow the pin or brooch to remain on the garment longer than necessary. Failure to do so can lead to discoloration or staining from the metal.
In selecting the scarf or shawl pin or brooch, you are faced with several choices. Should you match the exact shade of the pashmina or should you go with something that contrasts? It depends upon your preference and your purpose. Arguably wearing the same colors in brooch and pashmina fabric can result in one blending into the other. This is not the case, however, if the inset is set apart from the precious metal setting. A suitable variation is to select a color that is close to but not exactly the same as the fabric accessory. It may be darker or lighter. An effective look may be a pale pink pin against a dusky rose or orange stones against a brown pashmina.
Placement is also up to you. You can affix the pin or brooch centrally – in the middle of the intersection of the fabric of your pashmina scarf or shawl. You can also stick to one side. Another effectively striking option is to position the shawl or scarf to the back of your throat before tossing one side over the shoulder making sure the brooch or pin is about level with your collarbone.
While pashmina scarves and shawls are lovely and stylish accessories alone, you can make them appear even more stunning with the addition of an arresting pin or brooch.
