How do you identify a farmer, a cowboy, a pirate, a surfer dude or a biker? He (or she) wears a bandana. Is it any wonder you can easily apply this accessory to both practical uses and as a decorative fashion statement?
At its very basic, a bandana is an overlarge, usually cotton handkerchief. In the fashion world, where some things are not allowed to remain as they are, a bandana is taken and given a new twist, a variation on a theme. What is considered a utilitarian item suddenly gets a make-over. You take silk fabric and create a bandana of it to combine incongruous aspects of plain purpose and stylish fabric. The result is a knock-out.
Tradition dictates that bandanas are worn in one of three styles: around the neck, on the head or across the forehead. You can without difficulty duplicate these styles using a diagonally folded square silk scarf. The easiest to fashion is the headband style. You take the folded material and, beginning from the bottom triangular point, roll it upwards into a long tube. You then simply take it and tie it around your forehead. You can place the knots at the side or back.
If you opt for a typical neckerchief, you have more options. This depends upon the actual lengthy of the silk fabric and your stylistic preference. You could create a triangle by folding it crosswise. You could even decrease the triangle in side by folding the points in again. You can then place the remaining triangular cloth at the base of your throat and take the points to the back to tie it. Conversely, you could follow the same procedure but cross the points at the back of your neck, bring them forward and tie in front.
To capture the skull cap, biker or pirate bandana, you begin with folding the square silk scarf crosswise. You then take the longer edge of the fabric and place it across the forehead’s top. You take the right and left hand points to the back, tying them just under the hairline at the base of your skull. You can then choose whether to put the knot under or above the fabric trailing down the rear of your head. If you want to look really feminine, allow the ends to trail down your back. Otherwise, conceal them.
To modernize the basic concept, consider using a checkered silk scarf. The checks of the scarf combine beautifully with the spectacularly soft fabric to create a simply stunning look.
