In order to obtain the softest of textures to the manufacture of jackets, sweaters and coats, producers have mixed cashmere with ordinary wool. The addition of cashmere has resulted in these products demanding and obtaining a higher price. Yet, the cost of a completely pure cashmere garment was even more costly, placing it out of reach of the average person. While a sale might make a simple cashmere scarf affordable, generally, only the wealthy could afford to wear actual cashmere.
Since the mid 1990s, a craze for pashmina scarves and shawls has been part of the fashion world. Although the fine and high quality product has been produced by hand harvested and spun wool for centuries, the product did not receive much notice by fashion aware women until that decade. The fad resulted in the availability of the product depleted by the sudden and strong demand. Prices soared and quality plummeted as lower quality products were sold as being pashmina. In fact, today, many products sold as pashmina still contain a blend of either cashmere or pashmina wool (70%) and silk (30%) or even the two in equal parts. It is not uncommon for normal wool to replace or be added to that of the Kashmir goats. Unfortunately, some sellers still retail these inferior scarves and shawls at the same price of the “real deal”.
The world is trying to be a kinder place. In considering the well-being of all animals, many are looking towards products and practices that do not harm the earth and its beings. Among the most environmentally friendly natural products are silk and wool. They cause less injury to the environment than mass-produced manmade items or products that deplete limited natural resources.
If you are looking at so-called natural products, two terms commonly being tossed about are cashmere and pashmina. Confusion often arises for usage, particularly when someone applies them to scarves and shawls.
