It’s the same every year; the first of the Christmas goods start appearing in the stores and the Christmas advertisements begin appearing on the television and most of us are hit with a mini wave of excitement. There are all those parties to look forward to, all those family members and friends to spend time with and, bliss oh bliss, that much-needed break from work. Typically though, by the time we have spent endless hours trying to decide what to buy for what feel like hundreds of loved ones, battled our way around the stores through crowds of people who seemingly only venture out once a year at Christmastime (where do all these people come from?), spent more hours wrapping all these gifts (while still wondering if we shouldn’t have chosen something different) and trudged out to the post office to mail them, suddenly Christmas doesn’t feel like much fun any more.
Almost without exception there comes a point in a woman’s life when she could just kick herself for having thrown out those treasured items of clothing and accessories which had long since gone out of fashion, because of course they nearly always come back in at some point. It might take a few years and we might not be the same size or shape that we were when we wore them originally, but still our daughters or grand-daughters would have killed for them.
The New Year, of course, is a time when many of us want to turn over a new leaf and start afresh. Perhaps certain things just are not working in our lives or maybe we have just become bored. While we are all free to make changes at any time that we want, the first of January is, however, not only a significant time to strike out in a different direction, but a memorable one.
If there is one thing that truly makes a woman stand out as lacking in style and sophistication, it must surely be a look which is uncoordinated. Mismatching styles, patterns and colors are simply the height of bad taste and can make an otherwise attractive woman look as though she got dressed in the dark.
As we make our way through our twenties, thirties and forties, it seems almost inconceivable that much about our physical appearance is going to change to any marked degree in the very near future. We may acquire the odd tiny wrinkle and put on an extra pound or two, but for the main part it seems as though we might just avoid the ravages of time that all of those before us have had to experience… until, that is, we reach our late forties or early fifties and then bang, suddenly it feels as though all the years have caught up with us overnight. Even though we might be as thin as rakes, those tell-tale areas of cellulite begin to show themselves and somehow our skins just doesn’t seem to fit quite as well as it once did. Arms and legs start to feel flabby and as our hemlines come down, so too do the lengths of our sleeves.
With the new season’s designs now well and truly making their presence felt in the stores and Christmas just around the corner, all the big designers are vying desperately to attract the custom of women who are either buying for themselves or searching for the perfect gifts for their female friends and relatives. With many items of designer clothing being out of the financial reach of today’s recession-hit customers though, it is the market for women’s silk scarves in particular which is seeing some of the hottest competition. Hermes, Burberry, Chanel and a host of others are all putting huge amounts of money into marketing their latest designs, and of course the cost of that marketing is partly why their prices are so high in relation to the quality that they are offering.
So, the time has come to treat yourself to a women’s scarf or shawl to brighten up your wardrobe and provide that added bit of pizzazz to your outfits. You might have a good idea as to the colors that best suit you and of your preferred designs, but what are you going to do about fabric?
What with birthdays, anniversaries, graduations and all kinds of other events taking place throughout the course of the year, by the time it gets to Christmas it can be all but impossible to think of yet another round of gift ideas. Because we are normally buying for the same loved ones year after year, we also have to be careful not to go repeating ideas and buying things that we have bought before and, on top of this, we usually do not know what people have bought for themselves in the meantime, which just adds another headache to the Christmas gift-buying scenario.
Mention the word shawl and what most people will think of is one of those coarse, knitted shawls like grandma used to wear. You remember? The triangular-shaped ones which were not exactly the picture of elegance and sophistication but served their purpose pretty well in terms of keeping grandma warm. Well, guess what? These have nothing whatsoever in common with the stunning silk shawls that you can buy today, except for the fact that the latter are also excellent at keeping you warm and toasty.
If there is one type of outing which is guaranteed to throw women into a quandary in terms of what to wear, it has to be a night at the opera. Perhaps because many people see the opera as being somewhat elitist, making sure that they do not show themselves up by turning up inappropriately attired is of the ultimate importance.
